The second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season is currently in progress in the UAE. Not many thought the tournament would resume given the packed international calendar these days with also the T20 World Cup set to be played. Earlier this year, BCCI had to postpone the IPL abruptly after the COVID-19 breached the bubble of several teams.
It was chaos at one point but the Indian board made sure all the foreign players reached home safely amidst a lot of uncertainty. Soon after things settled down, the BCCI started exploring the options to stage the remaining 31 matches of the tournament. And finally managed to find a window of just over three weeks to complete the season. And the response of the fans has been huge so far.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has revealed that the IPL 2021 has registered a significant growth in the viewership. No spectators were allowed during the first 29 matches in India while only a limited fans are being allowed for the ongoing second leg. This has certainly shot up the number of viewers watching their favourite teams play on television.
It will only get more exciting, says Jay Shah
In his latest tweet, Jay Shah has stated that the IPL 2021 garnered a whopping 380 million TV viewership till match 35. The number is significantly more than the 2020 season according to him at the same stage.
“I am delighted to share that #IPL2021 continues to register significant growth in viewership. 380 million TV viewers (till match 35), 12 million more than 2020 at the same stage. Thank you, everyone. It will only get more exciting from here on @IPL @StarSportsIndia @BCCI,” he tweeted.

The playoffs race is heating up now and the matches will only get interesting going forward. The viewership will definitely go up at the fag end of the season. Moreover, the fans of the IPL are expected to increase multifold with two more franchises set to get added for the next season. The cash-rich league will be a ten-team affair then.
