India is probably the second home ground for cricket, after England. A country where a majority consider it to be a religion and its fans to be its devotees. By this, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the country is a breeding ground for some pure cricket talent.
Out of the 1.3 billion population, only a handful of men and women represent the country at the international stage. When we come to the men’s national team, Virat Kohli sets as an example. Though the Indian captain couldn’t shine his stint with an ICC trophy, he has given the cricketing world some impeccable records.
He has introduced some young and impressive talent to the team, who have displayed some quality performances in the IPL or even First Class tournaments. Some have excelled and made a name in the cricketing world. But while some didn’t have time by their side or couldn’t use the given opportunity to the fullest and have faded away.
Here are 5 players, who debuted under Kohli’s captaincy but didn’t play much:
1. Mayank Markande
Mayank Markande, a young and budding leg spinner, has got limelight after his performance for the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL. He has scalped 15 wickets in 14 matches for the team, with an economy rate of 8.36.
He was also dominant in his First-Class career for Punjab. In his maiden Ranji season, he scalped 29 wickets in just six matches, which made him Punjab’s leading wicket-taker in the 2018 Ranji Trophy season. Through these performances, he got his maiden T20I call and he started his international campaign under Virat Kohli against Australia. But sadly, he couldn’t scalp a wicket in his only T20I match and wasn’t economical enough.
An increase in competition to enter the Indian squad and injuries has hindered the chances of the leggie making a comeback. And the same applies to his IPL stint, where he couldn’t get much chance to display his googlies.
2. Siddarth Kaul
Siddarth Kaul, a right-hand pacer who was a part of the winning team of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup, is known for his wicket-taking ability. He has also been a valuable contributor to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Starting his stint in the 2017 edition, he has scalped 16 wickets in just ten matches at an economy rate of 8.41. Kaul was also a highlight for the team in the next edition, when he scalped 21 wickets at an economy rate of 8.28.
As the numbers suggest, he got a national call and started he started his international campaign under Virat Kohli against Ireland. He played against England and Australia later but has scalped a mere four wickets in three matches with a not-so-good economy. With the uprising of other pacers and lack of execution from his end, he didn’t get any more chance after that.
3. T Natarajan
Known for his yorkers, T Natarajan‘s rise from scratch is something worth noticing. He got himself known after an impeccable performance for the Sunrisers Hyderabad after being benched for quite long.
Scalping 16 wickets in 16 matches, his bowling abilities has been valuable for his team. Some top-notch batters couldn’t get through his accurate yorkers, and thanks to his abilities, he got a chance to represent the country in both red-ball and white-ball formats.
During the Australian series, Natarajan went as a net-bowler for the Indian side. But with injuries coming on flow, he was considered to play for the national side. In his T20I career so far, he has taken seven wickets in four matches at a commendable economy rate of 7.62. But being prone to injuries, he has not got a chance to be a regular contributor for the Indian side.
4. Khaleel Ahmed
The left-arm pacer from Rajasthan has been known for its swing and variations. With an ability to take crucial wickets, Khaleel Ahmed seemed a budding star. Though he started his IPL campaign with the Delhi Daredevils, he has got fame for his performance for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was having one heck of a run with the ball for the team during the 2018 and 2019 editions.
Thanks to his IPL stint, the speedster got a maiden national call in the T20I side. He played his first match against West Indies. He has scalped 13 wickets in 14 games of T20I. But with a lack of proper execution in his upcoming games and increasing competition for the place of a stable pacer, he couldn’t get a chance to display his calibre and got far away from the selectors’ choice.
5. Shivam Dube
Shivam Dube, an all-rounder from Mumbai, made headlines after smashing five sixes in five balls in a Ranji game against Baroda. Through this performance, his swashbuckling talent with the bat was noticed by many.
By this, he got a call to play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he played under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Though he couldn’t make much of an impact with the bat and ball, he was decent in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the IPL (played for Rajasthan Royals in the 2021 edition).
By that, some thought he would be the ‘next big thing’ for the Indian Cricket team. And he got his maiden T20I call against Bangladesh. When it comes to his international stint, he wasn’t impactful with either bat or ball. In his five-match career so far, he has made 105 runs and scalped just five wickets. By this, it is evident why he couldn’t another chance.
