Usman Khawaja, who last played a Test match in the 2019 Ashes series, struck a magnificent century to help Australia post a big total as the hosts declared their innings on 416/8. Steve Smith did Steve Smith things as he hit another half-century before giving away his wicket to Stuart Broad again, for the ninth time in his career. No other bowler has got Steve Smith’s numbers than England pacer in the longest format of the game.

Khawaja got support from Australia’s lower order as well as captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon scoring 24, 34, and 16 valuable runs respectively. Stuart Broad got rid of the centurion Khawaja as he took a five-for and looked the only performer for the visiting team.

Meanwhile, out-of-form opener Haseeb Hammed and his partner Zak Crawley survived the crucial five overs at the end of the day though the latter was dismissed by Mitchell Starc but was called a no-ball. With a deficit of 403 runs, it looks like another mountain to climb for Joe Root and his side as their tour doesn’t get any better. The hosts would look to put more misery on the third day by bowling England out for another low score.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from the 4th Ashes Test, Day 2:

5 – With 60 50-plus scores, Steve Smith is now the fifth Australian batter to muster as many scores in Tests. Ricky Ponting (103), Allan Border (90), Steve Waugh (82), and Mark Waugh (67) are ahead of him.
