The 2021-22 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) is set to get underway on December 5 (Sunday) and fans must mark their calendars. The past 10 editions of the Australia-based T20 competition have witnessed some exciting action over the 22 yards and nothing less must be expected from the 11th season.

A total of eight sides will lock horns across 61 matches, including league stage and knock-out clashes, to determine the champion. Meanwhile, the first 19 games will take place before Christmas, with December 16,17, and 18 being off-days. However, the schedule will get pretty hectic afterward. As many as 28 games will take place in the next two weeks after Christmas, which also includes a total of eight doubleheaders.

In fact, there’s a triple-header as well on January 19, which would see the conclusion of the league stage. As far as format is concerned, all sides will meet each other twice in the league stage, following the double round-robin format. The top five teams will then advance to the qualifying round, where five matches will be played.

While the top two sides will meet in the Qualifier to determine a place in the summit clash, the fourth and fifth-placed teams will battle it out in the Eliminator. The winner of the Eliminator will then advance to the Knock-Out game, where the third-placed side is slotted by virtue. The winner of Knock-Out will meet the loser of Qualifier in the Challenger to determine the other place in the finals. Subsequently, the summit clash takes place on January 28 and a champion will be out.
