The Ashes 2021-22 has been one-way traffic so far with the hosts proving to be a big hurdle to overcome for England. The Joe Root-led side hasn’t had the best of times in recent Tests despite their skipper being in prime form with the bat and the fourth Test has been no different. Australia resumed day two at 125 for the loss of 3 wickets while Khawaja and Steve Smith were at the crease trying to build a partnership.
The fourth-wicket partnership extended to 115 as both Smith and Khawaja played an excellent hand with some odd boundaries. Once, the vice-captain was dismissed for 67, the onus was on Khawaja to take Australia to a big score and he played the role exceedingly well alongside the tailenders. The 35-year-old left-hander in his comeback Test brought up his 9th century in the format and his celebrations did show how much it meant to him and his family.
Australia managed to get some lower-order contributions from Pat Cummins(24), Mitchell Starc(38*), and Nathan Lyon(16*) while Khawaja was finally dismissed for a superlative knock of 137 from 160 deliveries. Australia with just a few overs left in the day decided to declare at 416 for the loss of 8 wickets.
England bowlers go through a tiring day
Stuart Broad, who was ignored for the first and third Test, picked up yet another five-wicket haul in the first innings against Australia. He did leak some runs at the back end of the innings but finished with figures of 5 for 101 in his 29 overs. Ben Stokes and Joe Root did support the bowlers with 22 overs and picked up one wicket combinedly.
After long spells from James Anderson, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, and Jack Leach, it was up to the batters now to do the talking at the end of the day. It was an intense last five overs of the day’s play as both the openers Haseeb Hameed and Zak Crawley have not been able to get through the new ball. However, England finished the day with 13 runs on board in 5 overs without losing any wickets.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the proceedings of Day 2:

Stuart Broad at 35y 196d is the fourth oldest England pacer to claim a five-wicket haul in Australia in #Ashes after
Freddie Brown (40-72) in 1951, Sydney Barnes (38-296) in 1912 and George Geary (35-247) in 1929.

"It doesn't matter what bowlers you play if you are getting bowled out for 140. That might be a bit brutal but that's the truth in Test cricket." Stuart Broad is taking no prisoners as usual #Ashes
