The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 got underway on March 26 as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with Kolkata Knight Riders. The two sides were also the finalists in the previous edition of the tournament and would look to replicate the same performances this season as well.

The Chennai Super Kings captain, MS Dhoni, who has been one of the finest leaders in IPL history, is known to back players who have gone on to play a major role in the success of the franchise in the tournament over the years. A few examples have been Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ambati Rayudu, and Deepak Chahar.

But there have been players who have failed to get opportunities, or could not get going under MS Dhoni, and realised their potential after joining a different team.

Here are 5 players who MS Dhoni didn’t back, but other captains did in the IPL:

5. Rahul Chahar

The leg-spinner Rahul Chahar was picked by the Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL 2017 auction. Although the team reached the final and finished as the runners-up, Rahul could appear in only three matches that season. Subsequently, he was picked up by Mumbai Indians in the 2018 auction.

Unfortunately, the leg-spinner could not find a place in the MI XI for the entire season, with Krunal Pandya and Mayank Markande being the first-choice options. But, the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy was a turning point of his career, where he emerged as Rajasthan’s leading wicket-taker.

Looking at his talent and form, Rohit played him in 13 matches of the 2019 season, and Rahul delivered with 13 wickets, with a match-winning spell of 1/14 off four overs in the final, thereby helping the team lift their fourth title.

4. George Bailey

The former captain and the present national chief selector of Australia, George Bailey has been a steady performer across all the formats of the game. He was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2009 auction, given his impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

Although Bailey piled up runs in the domestic circuit, he could not get an opportunity with MS Dhoni trusting the same combinations, which eventually helped his team winning the titles in 2010 and 2011. The middle-order batter featured in a total of only three matches during his stay from 2009 to 2012

After he was appointed Australia’s captain in 2012, he was chosen as the leader of Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in IPL 2014. In 16 appearances, Bailey contributed 257 runs and helped the team to reach their maiden Indian Premier League final.

3. Mayank Agarwal

The top-order batsman, with solid technique and fine composure, Mayank Agarwal was already a renowned batter in IPL 2017 when he was picked up by Rising Pune Supergiant. But he could not find a place in MS Dhoni’s XI, who went to play the finals of the tournament

In the 2018 auction, he was recruited by the Punjab Kings. But he could not do much, scoring only 120 runs in 11 matches. But, he was trusted by the likes of Ashwin and KL Rahul, and made a turnaround to end as the second-highest run-scorer of the team in 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons with 332, 424, and 441 runs, respectively.

The consistency with the bat at the top order earned him retention, and he has been chosen as the leader for this season. With an experience of over a decade in competitive cricket, Agarwal will look to win the first title for the Punjab Kings.

2. Wriddhiman Saha

Wriddhiman Saha has featured in each season of the IPL since its inception. After average performances for KKR from 2008 to 2010, he was released by the franchise. Although CSK bought him in IPL 2011, he could be a part of only 14 matches until 2013 and was rather unused, with MS Dhoni donning the wicket-keeping gloves.

He delivered his best performance in the 2014 edition, where he featured in all the matches of Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), under the leadership of George Bailey. In the season, Saha amassed 362 runs in 17 fixtures, while playing a key role to steer the team to their maiden IPL final, and also scoring a hundred, albeit in a losing cause.

The wicket-keeper kept churning out runs for Punjab Kings in the subsequent editions as well. From 2018 to 2021, Wriddhiman Saha has performed well for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He will feature for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022.

1. Andrew Tye

The Australian speedster, Andrew Tye, was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2015 auction. But he could not get a place in the XI due to the in-form bowlers like Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma, and Dwayne Bravo. In the next two editions, the franchise was banned due to match-fixing allegations.

In IPL 2017, Andrew Tye featured for Gujarat Lions, with Suresh Raina leading the team. In one of the fixtures, he registered a hat-trick and scalped 12 wickets in six matches in the tournament. Unfortunately, he had to leave the tournament mid-way after sustaining an injury.

Chennai Super Kings decided to use two Right-to-Match cards for Dwayne Bravo and Faf Du Plessis in IPL 2018 when they returned to play in the tournament. In the same edition, Tye secured the Purple Cap for Punjab Kings with 24 wickets in 14 matches, under the leadership of Ravichandran Ashwin.
