It could not have been a better start to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 as the hosts New Zealand suffered a last over collapse to lose a nail biter by just three runs in the end. Deandra Dottin, known more for her batting did all the damage with the ball in the last over and she removed the set pair at the crease to hand her side a close victory. There were two centurions on the day but it was Hayley Mathews’s effort that did not go in vain in the end.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. Deandra Dottin was off to a good start with three boundaries but soon perished for just 12 while Hayley Mathews looked good at the crease. Kycia Knight could manage just five runs in her short stay but the skipper Stephanie Taylor formed a crucial partnership of 66 runs partnership alongside Mathews.
Lea Tahuhu came back for her second spell and got an important breakthrough of Taylor for a 47-ball 30 while the wicketkeeper batter Shemaine Campbell (20) also got a 60-run stand going alongside Mathews. However, it was the partnership between Chedean Nation (36) and Mathews that saw the scoreboard ticking quickly and soon the opening batter reached a splendid century as well.
In her 119-run knock, Mathews hit 16 fours and one six and helped the side to post a formidable total by anchoring the innings from one end. Anisa Mohammed struck two fours towards the back end of the innings to take the total to 259 for the loss of nine wickets while Tahuhu was the pick of the bowlers picking up three wickets for 57 runs.
Sophie Devine’s century goes in vain
In reply, the host nation faced an early setback with the runout of Suzie Bates with just 14 on the board. Amelia Kerr who came in at three soon was removed for just 13 and the onus was on skipper Sophie Devine and Amy Satterthwaite to take the side home. The duo added a partnership of 76 runs for the third wicket. However, once Satterthwaite was dismissed for 31, a flurry of wickets fell with Devine stranded at the non-striker’s end.
Wicketkeeper Katey Martin did support well and helped Devine reach an excellent century. The right-handed batter hit 10 fours in her 108 run knock and she was dismissed at the 45th over-mark when the team needed her the most. Martin and Jess Kerr did find the boundaries towards the back end of the innings and it was down to 6 needed off the last over with three wickets in hand.
Dottin was given the responsibility of bowling the final over and she responded exceedingly well. The 30-year-old got the important wicket of Martin in the second delivery and picked up Kerr in the fourth delivery as well. A run out in the fifth delivery meant that the New Zealand women fell short by just three runs, thanks to a superlative last over from Dottin.

Couldn't have asked for a better start to the World Cup.
Dottin had gone 19 ODIs without taking a wicket and then she takes 2-2 defending six in the last!!

Dottin, Dottin, what a champion for West Indies – need 6 runs in final over then 1,W, 1,W, W and won the game for West Indies by just 3 runs in the first match of World Cup.

What an over from Dottin! 6 needed in 6 and she goes
1 W 1 W W and win by 3 runs.
Remember she has not bowled for three years. Cricket, you little beauty!

Hell of a way to start a World Cup there.
Strong “Old Pro” vibes from Dottin get it done.

Who remembers the last over Dottin bowled in the 2016 T20 World Cup Final? Dottin bowled five dots, created two wickets, with a well set Ellyse Perry on strike.
Aus were 147/5 after 19. Finished 148. Matthews and Taylor chased it down.
We've missed your bowling, Deandra. pic.twitter.com/YtWGGj7hkS
