Australia skipper Meg Lanning scored 97, opener Alyssa Healy 72, while Darcie Brown snared 3/30 runs to take Australia to their fifth consecutive victory in the ongoing Women’s World Cup. The Aussie side defeated India by six wickets at Eden Park in Auckland to continue their winning streak in the tournament. With this win, the Women in Yellow moved to ten points and have qualified for the semi-finals, whereas India suffered their third loss in the marquee event.
Speaking about how the match panned out, Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to field. Smriti Mandhana scored just ten runs, while Shafali Verma, who replaced Deepti Sharma, managed only 12 runs as India found themselves 28/2.
Captain Mithali Raj and Yastika Bhatia then registered the highest third-wicket partnership ever for India against Australia in ODIs (130 runs). Both struck the fifties with Harmanpreet Kaur also smashing an unbeaten half-century. The trio helped India in achieving a competitive total of 277/7 in 50 overs.
Chasing 278 to book their place in the semis, all the Aussie batters got going. Except for Tahlia McGrath, who came at the end to remain not out on 0 off 2, every Aussie batter crossed the 25-run mark. Alyssa Healy slammed a brisk 72 runs off 65 deliveries but the star of the day was skipper Lanning, who hammered 97 off 107 with the help of 13 fours to lead her side from the front.
Lanning got dismissed in the 49th over but the job had already been done by then. She was adjudged with the Player of the Match as Australia won by six wickets with three balls to spare. This was also the highest ever run-chase in World Cup history.
