Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have been two of the most successful teams in the history of IPL having won nine titles together. IPL fans across the globe wait for these two sides to clash against each other. The two teams have been arch-rivals, and have produced epic clashes whenever they lock horns. They will be up against each other on Thursday, April 21, in the 33rd match of the IPL 2022.

Both Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja are eyeing a place in the playoffs. However, the chances are fading as they struggle to return to the winning ways. While Mumbai Indians, having played six games so far, are yet to open their account, the Chennai Super Kings have only one win from six games as they struggle to set their team formation straight.

In all these years of the epic encounters between the two teams, let us have a look at some of the players who have represented, and played for both these top franchises.

Top 5 players who have played for both CSK & MI:

1. Dwayne Bravo

The West Indian all-rounder is one of the very popular faces in the IPL. Dwayne Bravo kick-started his IPL career with Mumbai, playing the first three seasons for them. He was then picked up by Chennai during the 2011 auction and has been with the team to date. Bravo represented Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from the tournament.

He is usually associated with CSK and has achieved many laurels with the Yellow Army, his recent feat was becoming the leading wicket-taker in the IPL history. The all-rounder has also recorded some great knocks with the bat during his stint with Chennai. Bravo has been an integral part of the Chennai franchise and has been part of their many special wins.

Bravo has been one of the most economical bowlers for CSK this season, having scalped 10 wickets in six matches so far in the tournament. He has not got many opportunities with the bat yet but will perform well once given the chance.

2. Ambati Rayudu

Making his IPL debut in 2010, he started his journey with the Mumbai Indians and impressed everyone with his consistent performances. His stint with the Mumbai franchise earned him a national call as he joined the Indian team thereon.

He was later roped in by Chennai Super Kings in 2018 when they made a comeback after a two-year ban and has been a prolific player for the side ever since. He played key roles as the franchise won the title in 2018 and 2021. At the mega auction this year, CSK fought hard to buy him back and paid a fee of INR 6.75 crore to get him.

In the ongoing season of the IPL, Rayudu has been struggling, just like his team. His highest score of this season is 46 runs, and the middle-order batter has only 128 runs from six games under his belt.

3. Harbhajan Singh

Fondly known as Bhajji pa, the former Indian all-rounder has represented only three teams in his IPL career, and two of them have been Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. He joined Mumbai in the inaugural IPL season, back in 2008 and spent almost a decade-long term with the men in blue.

After being released by the five-time IPL champions, Harbhajan Singh was roped in by CSK in the 2018 auction.  The off-spinner had a prolific season in 2019 for CSK, scalping 16 wickets in 11 matches. He has played most of his games for MI, accounting for 136 games and scalping 127 wickets in those 10 years.

Harbhajan went unsold in the 2022 auction but has had a prolific IPL career. He has 150 IPL wickets to his name in 163 matches at an economy of 7.07 runs per over. He announced his retirement from all formats of the game and joined the commentary panel this year.

4. Piyush Chawla

After having represented two franchises, Piyush Chawla joined CSK in 2020 as he was signed for INR 6.75 CR. But as the tournament progressed, Chawla could not find his place in the playing XI and was underutilized by the team. The veteran leg-spinner played only seven matches and picked up six wickets at an economy of 9.09 runs per over.

Next year, he was picked up by Mumbai Indians but played just one game throughout the season. Chawla managed to scalp one wicket at an economy of 9.50 runs per over. Although he was a permanent in the KKR squad, but could not maintain a consistent place with either CSK or MI.

In the 14 years of his IPL journey, Chawla has played 165 games and scalped 157 wickets at an economy of 7.88. His IPL journey began with Punjab when he represented the franchise in the inaugural season and picked up 17 wickets in 15 games.

5. Karn Sharma

He is one of the very few players in IPL history to have won an IPL title with three different teams – two of them being Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. In the year 2017, when he played for MI, he lifted the trophy under Rohit Sharma. The leg-spinner picked up 13 wickets in nine matches at an economy of 6.97 runs per over.

He then moved to CSK in 2018 to bag his third IPL title under MS Dhoni’s leadership. The Super Kings made a historic return to the cash-rich league after a two-year ban. Although Karne had very little impact, picking up only four wickets in six games, he is considered a lucky charm.

Before playing for MI and CSK, he was associated with the Hyderabad franchise and had won his first IPL title with the franchise. Now that he is with RCB, fans hope his luck factor would work for the franchise and they’ll bag their first-ever IPL trophy.
