The Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered a five-wicket defeat in their 3rd match of IPL 2022 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after a let down by their bowlers. Their bowlers couldn’t defend a decent total of 162 runs. The bowling unit gave away 73 runs in the last 8 overs while Daniel Sams gave 50 runs in his 3 overs while taking a wicket.
However, their batting unit was in a decent form, with Suryakumar Yadav scoring 52 runs off just 36 balls and the debutant Dewald Brevis scoring a fiery 29 runs off just 19 balls. Tilak Varma also contributed a decent total of 38 runs. Meanwhile, captain and opener Rohit Sharma failed to deliver yet again.
A disappointing display of bowling by Daniel Sams and the lack of discipline from Basil Thampi and the other bowlers were the factors that helped KKR win the match where MI was in control till the 15th over. For the 4th match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 9, the team might make some changes to their team and strategy to secure their first victory.
Let’s look at the three changes MI should make against RCB:
1) Suryakumar Yadav opens with Ishan Kishan
Although the captain Rohit Sharma has been an excellent opener for Mumbai Indians as well as the Indian cricket team, he is out of form currently and has failed to perform as an opener in all the three matches so far.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav was not available for the first two matches but he scored a fiery 50 in his first game against the KKR which shows that he is in good touch and perfectly suitable for opening the innings with Ishan Kishan.
Therefore, Suryakumar Yadav can open the innings with Ishan Kishan in place of Rohit Sharma, while the MI captain can bat at three just to give more time for himself to regain his touch.
2) Jayadev Unadkat replacing Basil Thampi
Basil Thampi was superb during Mumbai Indians’ first game against the Delhi Capitals (DC). However, the second game saw him give 26 runs in one over. The demerit of having Basil Thampi on the side is that he can be expensive when it’s not his day.
When it comes to Jaydev Unadkat, he has significantly improved. He displayed his skills with the new ball during the previous edition. He can always complete his full quota of four overs early on and leave the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Tymal Mills for the final few overs.
Hence, Mumbai Indians might bring Jayadev Unadkat in place of Basil Thampi as it can give a huge boost to their already struggling bowling attack.
3) Fabian Allen replacing Daniel Sams
Daniel Sams hasn’t performed up to the expectations for Mumbai Indians so far in the tournament. His final over during their match against Delhi Capitals (DC) changed the fate of the match. Besides, he went for 57 runs in his four overs as well. During the game against the Rajasthan-based franchise, Sams gave 32 runs in his four overs, without picking a wicket. He wasn’t impressive with the bat in hand either.
On the other hand, Fabian Allen can be a good utility pick. Moreover, Mumbai doesn’t have a spinner other than Murugan Ashwin in their XI and he can fill that gap efficiently as he is a decent spinner capable of taking crucial wickets. Last but not the least, Allen can hit the ball a long way as well.
Therefore, Fabian Allen might make his debut for MI in place of Daniel Sams as he will provide solid support in both the bowling and the batting department. He is an excellent fielder too.
