Washington Sundar has been ruled out of India’s three-match ODI tour to Zimbabwe after suffering a blow to his left shoulder during his county stint for Lancashire in the domestic One Day Cup. Sundar had tried to stop a drive when he landed badly on his shoulder and remained doubtful since then.
The off spinner will now have to head into NCA for his rehabilitation and this adds to his long list of injury setbacks this year. Sundar last played an international game in the ODI series against West Indies in February and had to miss out on a lot of action due to injuries.
Bengal’s Shahbaz Ahmed has been named replacement for Sundar and the all rounder has done a great job for the Royal Challengers Bangalore this year. The 27-year old has earned his maiden call up to the Indian national side and let us look at 3 players who could have been picked up as Washington Sundar’s replacement for the Zimbabwe tour.
3 Players who could’ve been picked as Washington Sundar’s replacement:
1. Rahul Tewatia
Rahul Tewatia managed to keep his cool more than one time in the recent IPL 2022 season for the Gujarat Titans and proved to be a sensational pick in the auction. Having bought for huge bucks, Tewatia had the responsibility of finishing off games and with Hardik Pandya turning up to bowl, Tewatia played purely as a batter.
India are likely to play Deepak Hooda in the top six, and hence, Tewatia would have been ideal in the squad given his match winning abilities with the bat down the order and he can chip in with his leg spin bowling as well. He was picked up once in the Indian squad in 2020 after an excellent season for the Rajasthan Royals, but had to miss out due to fitness concerns.
He hit two sixes off two balls to win a game for the Gujarat Titans and played an immense part in their title winning campaign this year. He is a good fielder inside the circle, and could have been an option that India could have opted for.
2. Krunal Pandya
Krunal Pandya did not have the best of seasons for the Lucknow Super Giants despite being bought for a big price and he scored 183 runs in 14 games in IPL 2022 at an average of 20.33 and a strike rate of 126.20. The left hander picked up 10 wickets with the ball but his economy rate was quite impressive with 6.97 to his name.
Pandya can bowl in different stages of the game and is more than handy with the bat down the order. The Baroda lad has got match winning skills and has already represented India in five ODIs after a good Vijay Hazare Trophy season. With 130 runs in five games at an average of 65, Krunal deserved his chance in the ODI squad for Zimbabwe tour.
The 31-year-old also brings a left handed option into the mix and he can chip in as a back up option for someone like Axar Patel. Pandya will certainly be in the scheme of things once he gets back in rythym after the domestic season gets underway.
3. Jayant Yadav
India currently have two off spin all rounders in Ravichandran Ashwin and Sundar, and with both not being available for the Zimbabwe tour, Jayant Yadav could have got a look in. The 32-year-old off spinner is no mug with the bat and has got a Test century under his belt for India.
Although Yadav was benched for the entire IPL 2022 season, he has played crucial roles for Mumbai Indians in the previous years and is quite good against the left handers. The all rounder last played for India in the tour of South Africa in 2022 and returned with figures of 0 for 53 in his ten overs.
Yadav has got the ability to vary his pace quite well and his experience in the domestic circuit for Haryana might come into use with the number of youngsters in the squad.
