Australia sealed the Chappell–Hadlee Trophy after a commanding victory in the second ODI against rivals New Zealand in Cairns on Thursday. While the team is basking in the glory of another series victory against the neighbors, skipper Aaron Finch's future in the team hangs by a thread after another dismal outing. According to reports, the white-ball skipper is set to make an announcement about his cricketing future on Saturday in Cairns.

The hosts completed a thrilling victory against the Kiwis in the series opener and backed it up with a resounding victory in the second ODI, defeating the visitors by 113 runs. But it was not a great outing for the Australian skipper Aaron Finch, whose woes with the bat continued, falling for his fifth duck of 2022 – the most by an Australian in a calendar year.

The Australians were reeling at 54/5, losing five wickets inside 100 runs for the second consecutive time in the series. But a resolute Steve Smith came to the rescue for the Kangaroos before the tail wagged to push Australia to a competitive score. And reports have surfaced in the country in the aftermath of the victory with Finch's retirement from the 50-over format on the cards.

Australia will certainly still start with Aaron Finch in the T20 World Cup: Michael Clarke

Finch's form is a big worry for the defending T20 WC champions, as 0, 5, 5, 1, 15, 0, and 0 are his scores in the last seven ODI innings. Former Australian skipper Michael Clarke had also stated that the team might look at different options in 50-over cricket if Finch's lean run with the bat continued in the final ODI of the series. But he reckoned that the explosive opener will be a part of the T20I team heading to the T20 World Cup.

"He needs runs, there is no doubt about it… you can’t drop Finchy out of the World Cup squad now. I’m assuming they’re looking at the one-day cricket different from the Twenty-20, so even if he makes no runs in this last one-day, that might be the end of his one-day career, but I think they’ll certainly still start with him in the Twenty-20 World Cup,” Michael Clarke said on the big sports breakfast as quoted by Fox Cricket.
