It has been a disappointing campaign for India in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 so far and they are virtually knocked out from the race after two back-to-back losses. Against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, India’s bowling plans seemed to be toothless and the lack of early wickets meant that the Island nation had a brilliant powerplay. The momentum was always on the batting side and the likes of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis raced away to their fifties in no time.

Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the first to get the breakthrough for India as he picked up Nissanka in the 12th over, and it opened the door to get another wicket. Charith Asalanka came in at three, and Chahal got rid of him for a duck in the same over to bring some hope in the Indian camp. However, the danger man Kusal Mendis was still batting.

With Danushka Gunathilaka dismissed for just one run, Chahal came up to bowl his final over. Rohit’s plan did work that time, as the leggie scalped Mendis for 57 by trapping him lbw as Sri Lanka got from 97/0 to 110 for 4. Chahal did turn around the game for India and no wonder, his former IPL skipper Virat Kohli could not stop himself from celebrating as he kissed on Chahal’s forehead.

Meanwhile, espite Chahal’s brilliant spell, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka finished off the game in style with a match-winning partnership for the fifth wicket. The only way that India can qualify from here on is to beat Afghanistan and hope that Pakistan loses both their remaining encounters against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, given that India’s net run rate is better than the other two teams.
