India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia was announced on Monday, September 12.  The squad announcement saw premier pace bowlers Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah return to the Indian setup. Also, promising young talents like Arshdeep Singh and Deepak Hooda made the cut.

However, some proven performers who fetched the big bucks in the last IPL Mega Auction and are rated highly in the T20 circuit failed to break into the 15-member team.

Let us look at the five most expensive players in IPL 2022, who missed out on India's squad for the marquee tournament.

5. Avesh Khan -  INR 10 crore (Lucknow Super Giants)

Avesh Khan broke into the national side on the back of stellar performances in the IPL. He had a good season for the Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 too where he took 18 wickets in 13 games at an economy of 8.73.

Avesh can consistently bowl at speed of over 140 kmph and also has a variety of slower balls in his arsenal. India looked at him as a great prospect for the World Cup and gave him a consistent run. However, the Indore-born pacer had a fairly ordinary Asia Cup 2022 and couldn't meet the expectations.

In the 15 T20I matches played thus far, the speedster has taken 13 wickets and conceded runs at an alarming rate of 9.11. He was competing for a seamer slot with fellow compatriot Arshdeep Singh. But the left-arm pacer was quite exceptional for the Men in Blue in the recently culminated Asia Cup and pipped Avesh in the race to the World Cup.

4. Shardul Thakur -  INR 10.75 crore (Delhi Capitals)

Shardul Thakur was part of the Indian team during India's T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Thakur is a wicket-taker and can bowl at any phase of the game. Additionally, he can play vital cameos with the bat lower down the order too.

Shardul adds versatility as a player with his all-round prowess. However, he did not have a great IPL 2022. The bowling allrounder played 14 games for his new franchise Delhi Capitals and took 15 wickets at an economy of 9.79.

The 30-year-old was competing for the bowling allrounder slot with Harshal Patel whose stocks are on a meteoric rise. Shardul, on the other hand, failed to impress in the limited opportunities he was provided with and hence couldn't get a ticket to Australia.

3. Shreyas Iyer -  INR 12.25 crore (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Shreyas Iyer has been a constant figure in the Indian camp across formats. At the start of the year 2022, the 27-year-old was at his best, piling on runs for fun, especially in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. However, he could not carry the same form going forward.

The KKR skipper had a middling year at IPL 2022 by his lofty standards. Iyer scored 401 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 134.56. The Mumbai-born was looked at as a backup batter in the build up to the T20 World Cup and was primarily contesting for that slot with Deepak Hooda.

Hooda had a stellar IPL and replicated the rich vein of form in the international circuit. He is flexible in terms of batting positions and can be really handy with the ball as well. It gave him an edge over Iyer and the Mumbai batter missed out on selection. But, nonetheless, he will be travelling with the team as one of the stand-by players.

2. Deepak Chahar - INR 14 crore (Chennai Super Kings)

Deepak Chahar has been among the best new-ball bowlers in the Indian circuit. He was looked at as someone who can help in getting rid of India’s woes inside the powerplay in the shortest format. Also, he has displayed his ability with the bat too, and his presence has always boosted India’s batting depth.

Deepak has been an asset to the Men in Blue and his IPL franchise - CSK. But the bowling allrounder was sidelined due to an unfortunate prolonged injury layoff for the majority of this year. The 30-year-old did not feature in the IPL 2022 as well. He made his comeback in the ODI series against Zimbabwe last month (August).

The lack of game time went against Deepak. Moreover, with Harshal Patel getting back to full fitness, the swing bowler's chances of making it to the final 15 were diminished. However, he is among the stand-by players for the T20 extravaganza in October.

1. Ishan Kishan - INR 15.25 crore (Mumbai Indians)

Ishan Kishan is known for his fearless batting approach. The wicket-keeper batter was part of India’s World Cup plans initially and performed fairly well in the chances he got. As of now, the 24-year-old has played 19 T20I matches and scored 543 runs at a strike rate of 131.16.

However, there were a few things that worked against the Jharkhand batter. Ishan had a rather mediocre outing in IPL 2022 where he struck at 120.11 - quite uncharacteristic of him. With KL Rahul a certainty to start as an opener, the dashing batter only had the backup wicket-keeper spot to make a case for himself.

But Dinesh Karthik, with his prolific performances in the IPL 2022 for Royal Challengers Bangalore and then for India, had a strong resume for the wicket-keeper slot. Also, the 37-year-old fulfills the role of a designated finisher which is highly invaluable. Therefore, Kishan ended up losing the spot to Karthik.
