Defending champions Australia will lock horns with the Jos Buttler-led team England in what is going to be a virtual knock-out game for the two teams in the 26th match of the T20 World Cup 2022. The two sides were deemed as favourites to make it to the semi-finals this year, but Australia’s early defeat to New Zealand and England facing an upset against Ireland in their previous fixtures has changed the equation.

When Australia lost their campaign opener to New Zealand, their net run rate took a massive toll. Though they won the next game against Sri Lanka, the Men in Gold and Green still have a negative run rate (1.555) and are placed fifth in their group’s points table. Thus, they can not lose another game in the tournament, and all the remaining fixtures are crucial for them.

Though two defeats won’t rule them out, their net run rate will play a big role in their qualification process. Australia and England locked horns for a three-match T20I series before the start of the World Cup, and England bagged a 2-0 win. It will be a challenge for the hosts, but they will look to come hard at England.

Just like India and Pakistan, Australia and England have been arch-rivals. There aren't many things bigger than this. Any encounter between Australia and England is significant, and the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the fixture.

Furthermore, Australia have only triumphed once in their previous seven T20I matches against England. When the two teams faced off in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021, England were guided to a resounding victory by Jos Buttler as Australia were bundled out for 125 runs, and England chased the target down in just 11.4 overs.

Pitch Conditions

We saw how quick was the Perth surface in the game between England and Afghanistan. So, the wicket for the England and Australia game won't be any different. Pacers will look to make the most of the conditions on offer.

Playing Combinations for AUS vs ENG

Australia

Though the Australian side has been in good form, they suffered a setback when their ace wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade tested positive for Covid-19. As per the revised rules, he can participate in the upcoming contest, but the team would not risk him if he doesn’t feel well.

Predicted Playing XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade/Cameron Green, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

England

England lost the previous game to Ireland, and that would have hurt them big time, but they’ll be looking for a comeback. They have a great record against Australia in the recent few games and are unlikely to make any changes to their combination.

Predicted Playing XI: Jos Buttler(w/c), Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
