As the eighth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is set to begin on October 16, the West Indies team have already announced their squad for the mega event. However, to everyone’s surprise, Shimron Hetmyer has been excluded from the squad after the flamboyant batter missed his flight to Australia. Other than that, captain Nicholas Pooran will be hopeful for a better result than they had in the 2021 edition of the event.
Their recent run of form in T20I cricket however hasn’t given any indication of improvement. The Caribbean team tasted defeat in their last T20I series against India and New Zealand. Before the all-important T20 World Cup, the team will also play a T20I series against the defending champions Australia and then a couple of warm-up games against UAE and the Netherlands.
Interestingly, the two-time world champions will have to play in the First Round as they didn't earn a direct qualification spot in the Super 12. They will have to face Scotland, Ireland and Zimbabwe in the First Round and the top two teams will qualify for the Super 12 of the mega tournament in Australia.
Coming to the team dynamics, Brandon King was the leading run-scorer in the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League. He is going to be one of the most important players for the West Indies.
Captain Nicholas Pooran had a poor season with Trinbago Knight Riders and that is a major concern for the team. Things need to change as the West Indies lack stability in the middle order. With the ball, Alzaari Joseph has been in stellar form. He notched up 18 wickets in the CPL and bowled at an economy of 6.75.
