The IPL 2023 auction culminated on December 23. The franchises spent a total of INR 167 crores to acquire 80 players in the bidding arena and the likes of Sam Curran (INR 18.5 crore), Cameron Green (INR 17.5 crore), Ben Stokes (INR 16.25 crore), Nicholas Pooran (INR 16 crore), and Harry Brook (INR 13.25 crore) were the biggest earners.
The marquee event was not all about the established T20 stars from around the world. It also witnessed uncapped Indian players garnering a lot of interest and franchises did not shy away from breaking the bank to rope them in.
Here are three uncapped Indian players who triggered a bidding war at IPL 2023 auction
3. Vivrant Sharma
Vivrant Sharma is one of the exciting prospects in the Jammu & Kashmir cricketing circles. The 23-year-old has taken bowling attacks to the cleaners and provided his side with brisk starts. He is also known for his bowling exploits and has chipped in with crucial breakthroughs when needed.
The batting all-rounder was simply sensational at the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 as he was the second-highest run-getter for Jammu & Kashmir, amassing 395 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 94.72. On the bowling front, he bagged five wickets at an economy of 6.25.
Vivrant is a valuable addition to any side with his ability to contribute in both departments. And given his rich vein of form, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad went all guns blazing to acquire his services before SRH grabbed the southpaw for INR 2.6 crore.
2. Mukesh Kumar
Mukesh Kumar has been a bankable name in the Indian domestic circuit. The 29-year-old has picked up 123 wickets in 33 first-class matches at an average of 21.49. Also, he has fared well in the shortest format, bagging 25 scalps in 23 matches at an economy of 7.20.
Mukesh was quite outstanding in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 and took 20 wickets for Bengal in five matches. The ace pacer was also amongst the wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, picking up nine scalps in six games at an economy of 4.91.
Mukesh is a genuine wicket-taker and has proved his mettle in the domestic arena time and time again. Therefore, when the Bengal seamer went under the hammer, franchises such as Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings raised their paddle to sign him. In the end, DC managed to pick him at a whooping sum of INR 5.5 crore.
1. Shivam Mavi
Shivam Mavi has been a proven performer in the Indian domestic circuit. He has featured in 36 List-A matches and bagged 59 wickets at an economy of 4.85. The 24-year-old has done a decent job in the Indian Premier League, taking 30 wickets in 32 games at an economy of 8.71.
However, the ace pacer had a miserable campaign in the 15th IPL edition as he featured in six matches for KKR and picked only five scalps at an alarming rate of 10.32. Following Mavi's awful season, the Kolkata franchise decided against retaining him.
Though the Noida-born was nowhere close to his best in the previous season, he has shown glimpses of brilliance in the cash-rich league in the past. Also, Mavi showed his bowling might in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, taking 14 wickets in seven games at an economy of 4.15.
Therefore, when the Uttar Pardesh pacer entered the IPL 2023 auction, Gujarat Titans left no stone unturned to grab him and signed himi for a hefty sum of INR 6 crore.
