Despite being in control for majority of the second innings during the first semi-final of the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup, India couldn’t finish the job as Australia once again reigned supreme over the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side.
After the India skipper’s unfortunate dismissal, none of the players could step up as Australia managed to win by five runs to qualify for the all-important final, which is slated to take place on February 26.
After the culmination of the clash, Player of the Match, Ashleigh Gardner acknowledged that India were in the driver’s seat at the tenth-over mark of India’s batting innings and that they were the favourites to win the match. However, she also mentioned that everyone in the team showed a lot of character and bounced back well to register a magnificent win in Cape Town on Thursday (February 23).
“I think at the ten-over mark in India's batting innings, everyone had probably written us off, but I think that just shows our character within our side and that's why the best teams win in those types of positions,” Gardner said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“What we speak about is when our backs are up against the wall, we always try and find a way, and today we probably had no right to win at one point there. They were cruising and then we found a way to get some wickets and ultimately came out on top,” the all-rounder added.
One of the best wins I have been involved in: Meg Lanning
Australia skipper Meg Lanning was thrilled after winning the semi-final game against India. She called it to be one of the best wins of her career and also stated that she is very proud of her girls for showing great fighting spirit.
“One of the best wins I have been involved in. To fight back from well behind and win despite not playing our best cricket. Great fighting spirit from the girls, couldn't be more proud of them,” the 30-year-old said as quoted by the Indian Express.
