The 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy came to a thrilling conclusion as India clinched the series with a 2-1 victory against the Aussies. After dominating the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi, the hosts succumbed to a defeat as Australia made a resilient comeback in the third match. The fourth and final Test concluded in a draw, which handed India the series win.
Following the Test series, both sides will now take each other on for a three-match ODI series, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 17. The first ODI of the three-match series will be held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Notably, the last ODI at the venue was also between India and Australia, back in 2020.
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be leading India in the first ODI as regular skipper Rohit Sharma will be absent due to family commitments. In Rohit’s absence, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan will be expected to open the innings for the hosts, as KL Rahul could bat down the order.
Australia will also see their regular skipper Pat Cummins absent due to the recent passing of his mother. Steve Smith will lead the visitors for the entirety of the series. David Warner also returns to the side and will be expected to open the innings for the Aussies.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium has served the batters well. The side batting first could be at a massive advantage as they will look to set a high score to set up a thrilling run chase in the second innings. Batters will be expected to go big with their shots and get runs on the board.
