The ODI World Cup 2023 delivered blockbuster cricketing action in its first week and cricket enthusiasts are expecting the competition to be more exciting in the next few weeks. It’s been just a week and fans saw some incredible records getting created and shattered in this competition. Players such as Rohit Sharma, David Warner, Kusal Perera, Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and Devon Conway looked in amazing touch in the first week of the competition.
As a result, several records were shattered to create new history. In the same vein, some players and teams hit the headlines for shattering some old World Cup records and hitting new heights.
Here are some top records broken in the first week of the ODI World Cup 2023:
10. Aiden Markram's fastest World Cup century
Aiden Markram grabbed a lot of eyeballs during his team's first ODI World Cup 2023 game against Sri Lanka in Delhi. The right-handed batter chalked up a 49-ball century against Dasun Shanaka and his boys and broke Ireland's Kevin O'Brien's record of a 50-ball hundred against England in the 2011 World Cup. The 29-year-old went back to the pavilion after scoring 106 runs off only 54 deliveries.
During his stupendous knock, he scored 17 boundaries (14 fours and three sixes). His relentless approach against bowlers played a crucial role in helping South Africa rack up a mammoth total of 428 runs on the board. Consequently, Markram's batting effort got him the Player of the Match award in his team's 102-run win.
Before Markram, AB de Villiers was the fastest centurion for South Africa in the World Cup. The 'Mr. 360' had wreaked havoc with his 52-ball ton against the West Indies. He achieved the memorable feat at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in the 2015 edition of the ODI World Cup.
9. Most fours in a World Cup match
South Africa and Sri Lanka locked horns in the fourth match of the ODI World Cup 2023, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, and the former registered a convincing 102-run win. In this game, South Africa scored 400+ score for the eighth time, tasking Sri Lanka to chase a huge total of 429 in 50 overs. Replying to the humongous total, Sri Lanka got folded on 326 in 44.5 overs.
In the entire game, 74 fours were scored which is the most in a World Cup contest. Earlier the most fours were scored in the Australia versus South Africa game (72 fours), at Basseterre, in the 2007 World Cup. South Africa scored 45 fours during their batting innings, of which 39 came from the bats of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram, who scored centuries in the match.
From Sri Lanka’s side, Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka put up some fight with 76 (42) and 79 (65), respectively. Asalanka hit eight fours during his spectacular knock and Mendis also hit four fours. Captain Dasun Shanaka scored 68 off 62 and he also amassed six fours in his innings.
8. Highest aggregate in a World Cup game
The game between South Africa and Sri Lanka which was played in Delhi, also recorded the highest aggregate in the ODI World Cup history. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and invited the Proteas to bat first. Riding on the exceptional knocks from de Kock, van der Dussen, and Markram, South Africa posted 428/5 on the board.
Sri Lanka failed to chase the total but scored 326 runs in 44.5 overs. Charith Asalanka, who scored 79 off 65, became the leading run-getter from Sri Lanka. After the early departure of Pathum Nissanka on nought, Mendis also took South Africa’s bowling attack to the cleaners.
The wicketkeeper batter notched up 76 off 42 and he decorated his rapid innings with 12 boundaries (eight maximums and four fours). Shanaka also contributed 68 runs off 62 deliveries with six fours and three sixes to curtail the margin of defeat. Combining the scores of both sides, 754 runs were made which is the highest aggregate in a World Cup game.
7. Mitchell Starc becomes the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in the World Cup
Australia pacer Mitchell Starc became the fastest bowler to clinch 50 wickets in the ODI World Cup history. Starc surpassed former Sri Lanka speedster Lasith Malinga’s record of 50 scalps in 25 innings. The Aussie paceman reached the milestone in just 19 innings, grabbing Ishan Kishan’s wicket in Australia’s first ODI World Cup 2023 match against India, in Chennai.
Starc’s journey has been sensational in the World Cup as he caused a lot of trouble to batters with his disciplined bowling. In the 2015 World Cup, he claimed 22 wickets in eight matches at an economy of 3.50 and ended up as the joint-leading wicket-taker with New Zealand’s Trent Boult.
In the 2019 World Cup, the star Aussie pacer took 27 wickets in 10 matches at an economy of 5.43 and ended up as the highest wicket-taker again. His outstanding performance in the series also made him the bowler with the most wickets in a World Cup edition.
6. Rohit Sharma becomes the Indian batter with the highest number of maximums in the World Cup
India skipper failed to produce an effective knock against Australia in his first 2023 World Cup match but in the game against Afghanistan, the veteran came heavily on bowlers and notched up a scintillating century. Riding on his 131-run knock-off in just 84 balls, the 'Men in Blue' handed an eight-wicket defeat to the Afghan side.
During his swift innings, Rohit hit five sixes and became the Indian batter with the most maximums in the World Cup. Rohit shattered former India opener Sachin Tendulkar’s feat of 27 sixes in 44 innings to achieve this record. The India captain pulled off this remarkable feat in just 19 innings.
In the upcoming days, Rohit might be seen superseding former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, and South Africa’s legend AB de Villiers to sit in second place on the tally of batters with the most sixes in the World Cup tournaments.
5. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra's highest partnership for New Zealand in the World Cup
In the opening World Cup 2023 game in Ahmedabad, New Zealand hammered the defending champions England by nine wickets and made their start exceptional in the competition. Following a decent total of 283, the Kiwis lost Will Young early but Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra stepped up in this contest and took their team home with their superb batting displays.
Conway racked up an unbeaten 152 off just 121, while Rachin Ravindra also scored his maiden One-Day International (ODI) hundred and made an essential contribution to his team’s confident victory. Both Conway and Ravindra stitched an unbeaten 273-run stand in this contest and registered the most successful partnership for New Zealand in the World Cup.
Prior to Conway and Ravindra’s stand, Chris Harris and Lee Germon’s 168-run partnership against Australia in the 1996 quarter-final was the best stand for the Kiwis in the World Cup. The extraordinary partnership between Conway and Ravindra is also the fourth-most successful partnership in the World Cup.
4. Pakistan’s highest chase at the World Cup
Pakistan have got a perfect start in this World Cup, winning two off two games. After beating the Netherlands in their maiden 2023 World Cup match, Babar Azam and his men looked confident against Sri Lanka as well. Pakistan aren’t considered the best side during chases in ODIs. Before the 2023 World Cup, their most successful chase was 263 runs against New Zealand in the 1992 edition of the tournament.
In their second match of the 2023 World Cup, Pakistan chased down 345 against Sri Lanka and registered their highest successful chase at the World Cup. Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan chipped in with their centuries to pull off the enormous target of 345 and helped the Men in Green script history.
Rizwan played a vital role in this notable success as he took the team home with his 131-run innings off 121 balls and also received the Player of the Match award. This is also Pakistan’s second-most successful chase of their ODI history.
3. Rohit Sharma shatters Sachin Tendulkar's record of six tons
Rohit Sharma showcased his batting mettle against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and guided India to a comfortable eight-wicket triumph. The batting veteran produced a 131-run knock from his bat and became the Player of the Match. This was Rohit’s seventh century in the World Cup which is the most by any batter in the ODI event played every four years.
Rohit outdid his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar and became the owner of this marvellous batting feat. Tendulkar amassed six tons in 44 ODI innings in his 19-year ODI World Cup career while the current India captain accomplished the notable record in just 19 innings.
Rohit’s maiden World Cup century came against Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In the 2019 World Cup, the star India player became the leading run-getter with 648 runs in nine matches. He also smashed five centuries in the competition which is the most by any batter in a World Cup installment.

South Africa are looking formidable in this World Cup as they won their first two games of the competition confidently. In their maiden 2023 World Cup contest in Delhi, they outplayed Sri Lanka by a massive margin of 102 runs. On Delhi’s batting track, the Protea batters came heavily on Sri Lanka bowlers.
Almost after eight years, South Africa got three centuries in an innings of an ODI match, with the scintillating tons of Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram against the 1996 World Cup champions. These runs made them the team with the highest total in an innings of the World Cup. This was the eighth occasion when the Proteas crossed the 400-run mark in ODI cricket.
During their innings, Temba Bavuma and his boys also scored 45 fours which is the most by any team in a World Cup game. Following the blockbuster batting show from South Africa, it was witnessed how the massive score put pressure on Sri Lanka as the island nation capitulated on 326 in 44.5 overs.
In the World Cup, it was the third time the Proteas crossed the 400-run mark. Back in the 2015 World Cup, South Africa scored 408 and 411 against the West Indies and Ireland, respectively. After starting the 2023 World Cup confidently, Bavuma and Co.'s endeavours will be to continue their aggressive approach in further matches and qualify for the knockouts.
