The ODI World Cup 2023 is heading towards its business and some teams have established their authority right from the very start. One of those sides is New Zealand, the 2019 World Cup finalists, who came into the tournament all guns blazing.
Having played six games in the tournament so far, the Balck Caps have managed to win four and have lost twice, sitting in third place with eight points. The side is well on its way to making it to the knockout stages of the competition, however, despite their excellent form, a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament for New Zealand is not guaranteed. One of the biggest reasons that the Black Caps could face difficulty qualifying could be their upcoming fixtures.
New Zealand will play South Africa, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in their next three matches and victories in at least two of these games will almost secure a knockout spot for them. However, the clash against the current table-toppers Proteas could be crucial and difficult one for New Zealand.
Further, the game against Sri Lanka could also be a must-win in a specific situation as well as despite an injury ridden campaign, Sri Lanka still are in reach of six wins in the froup stages. However, one positive aspect for New Zealand fans would be the side’s net run rate. After six games, the Black Caps have a NRR of 1.232, which is quite healthy and could come in handy if the situation arises.
New Zealand gear up to take on Proteas next
After Australia edged out an all-time classic game against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 28, the Black Caps will look to regroup and shift their focus on their next assignment. New Zealand will take on in-form South Africa in the 32nd game of the World Cup on Wednesday, November 1 in Pune.
As the clash approaches, it could be interesting to see which side comes out on top. On the back of consecutive losses, New Zealand will be keen on putting in an improved performance.
