Mumbai Indians (MI) qualified for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition, however, their overall performance wasn’t satisfactory. The five-time champions lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) by 62 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and ended their journey in the competition.

In the league’s 2024 edition, MI will look to play quality cricket under their skipper Rohit Sharma to lift the coveted trophy for the record sixth time. However, prior to the competition, the MI team management might try to get rid of some non-performing names and make some great buys in the upcoming auction to be held in Dubai on December 19.

Here are three players that might not feature in MI’s retention list

3. Hrithik Shokeen

Hrithik Shokeen’s job was to support Piyush Chawla to reinforce MI’s spin-bowling unit. The off-break bowler showed up in eight matches and took only three wickets at an expensive economy of 9.84 in IPL 2023. Shokeen has been associated with the franchise since 2022 but he has failed to deliver something solid with the ball.

Back in the 2022 IPL auction, Shokeen was sold to MI for INR 20 lakhs. He made his IPL debut with two scalps in five matches at an economy of 8.47. Noting his ineffective bowling performance in the last two IPL editions, the Mumbai-based outlet might not hesitate in parting ways with the young spinner.

Shokeen, who is a vital member of Delhi in India’s domestic circuit, has exuded confidence with the ball in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). He ended the domestic T20 tournament with three wickets in two matches. However, despite his decent performance, Mumbai Indians might not forget his previous bowling numbers in the league.

2. Riley Meredith

In Jhye Richardson’s absence, MI signed Riley Meredith to bolster their fast-bowling unit. It was an incredible chance for the Australian player to showcase his bowling mettle but the pacer emerged as a failure. In five outings, he scalped only seven wickets at a terrible economy of 10.52 in IPL 2023.

Meredith was dropped from MI’s playing XI after the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium. Noting his consistent failure with the ball, captain Rohit Sharma didn’t trust him for the remaining matches. In his last appearance against RR, the Aussie speedster took Dhruv Jurel’s wicket but splurged 51 runs in his four-over spell.

Richardson, who couldn’t show up for Mumbai in IPL 2023, recently made a comeback from his shoulder injury for Western Australia in the Marsh Cup. Before the IPL 2024, Richardson might mark his presence for MI. With Richardson’s availability, the MI team management might not give Meredith a place in its list of retained players.

1. Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer became part of Mumbai at INR eight crore in the IPL 2022 auction. The England pacer was trusted by MI to assist their fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to strengthen their pace attack. He missed the entire 2022 installment of the mega T20 league due to an elbow injury.

Archer participated in IPL 2023 for MI and his responsibility was to lead Mumbai’s pace attack in the absence of Bumrah, who missed the entire season due to a back injury. In Bumrah’s unavailability, the 28-year-old England speedster played five matches and got only two wickets at an economy of 9.50.

Following IPL 2023, Archer missed Ashes 2023 and World Cup 2023 after the recurrence of his elbow injury. Noting his poor fitness and underwhelming performance in IPL 2023, MI might release the star pacer to pick up some other bowling option in the upcoming business event in Dubai.
