After a lot of speculations circulating on the internet for all these months, it is finally official! Ahmedabad and Lucknow are the two new teams. CVC, a private equity fund, bought the Ahmedabad franchise for INR 5625 crore.

There has been a lot of hype around the Ahmedabad team. This is mainly due to the fact that their home ground is all set to be the Narendra Modi Stadium which is in Ahmedabad itself. This stadium is the biggest in the world and India hosted England for the majority of matches earlier this year during the tour.

Moreover, the state of Gujarat has a lot of cricket fans and they have been desperately waiting for an Ahmedabad based team. However, this team will have to build the whole squad from scratch and will not have the liberty of having top Indian cricketers as they are expected to get retained. The franchise will have to find a captain and here we bring you five players who can get the chance to lead the new team.

Here are five players who can lead Ahmedabad in IPL 2022:

1. Joe Root

This might be a surprising pick as Joe Root is yet to make his IPL debut. However, he is an experienced player and has seen it all. Besides, he is currently the Test captain of England.

Although it is a different format but his captaincy skills have been praiseworthy. Besides, he has always ledfrom the front. He hasn’t been a regular in England team in the shortest format of the game but his temperament is good enough for this T20s too.

There were reports recently that Root might put his name in the auction and if he does, the newest franchise will be interested in securing his services. Joe Root is a brilliant T20 player having scored 893 runs in 32 international matches in the format at a strike-rate of around 126.

2. Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes needs no Introduction. He is arguably one of the best players of this era. Anyone would happily pay to watch his unmatched abilities.

He has played as many as 4 IPL seasons as of now. While he has been inconsistent in the cash-rich league, he has still managed to make an impact while playing for Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals. He has a sharp cricketing brain as well and his heroics for England in all formats are known to everyone.

Despite not having a lot of experience as a captain, he can turn out to be a superb leader. One of the major reasons for that is the fact that he thrives under pressure. The all-rounder has always liked the added responsibility, be it in any form.

3. Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch is one of the best T20I players of all time. He is an aggressive player and brings with him a lot of experience at the top of the order. He has been a superb captain as well over the last few years, especially for Australia.

The Aussie opener was the captain when Australia were the number one ranked T20I team in the world in 2020. His leadership skills have been one of the main reasons being Australia’s success in limited-overs cricket. Besides, he isn’t new to the IPL.

The Victorian batter has played as many as 87 games. He was the captain of the now defunct Pune Warriors India in 2013 too. He captained them in 10 games and would want to turn it around if given a chance yet again.

4. Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey is a veteran when it comes to the IPL. He has been playing the Indian T20 league since its inception in 2008. Moreover, he isn’t new to captaincy either.

He has been one of the most successful skippers in the domestic circuit. The top order batsman has ked his state team Karnataka superbly. An important point to be noted is his familiarity with the local talent of India. A good IPL captain is someone who is aware of the talent in the country so that he could know when and which player to try out during the tournament.

Despite playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the last 4 seasons, it is highly unlikely that they are going to retain him. Moreover, he has struggled majorly in the last couple of seasons and would want to right the wrongs in the near future. Thus, Ahmedabad will get a chance to sign him up.

5. Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is one of the most experienced Indian players right now. He made his international debut way back in 2004. Thus, a senior player like him is an ideal choice to lead a team.

The fact that he is a wicketkeeper makes his case even stronger. He has had a habit to keep speaking to the bowlers before almost every delivery. This shows the potential of his leadership skills. Besides, he was leading the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and 2019 as well as the first half of 2020.

While he didn’t really have a smooth end to his captaincy stint at KKR, his overall numbers as a skipper are more than decent. He has a win percentage of 50 and KKR reached the playoffs in 2018 under his leadership.
