Royal Challengers Bangalore has long been regarded as the Indian Premier League’s perennial underachievers, despite having the most devoted fanbase. The Bengaluru-based franchise will go through a major transition in the mega auctions in IPL 2022. Prior to the second half of the IPL 2021, RCB captain Virat Kohli declared that this would be his final season as captain of the RCB franchise, citing a heavy workload as the reason for his decision.

Furthermore, RCB’s star player AB de Villiers recently retired from all forms of cricket, leaving a significant void in the team. Because the remaining players, including Glenn Maxwell and Yuzvendra Chahal, do not inspire much confidence of captaining the team, RCB may look for a new captain in the upcoming mega auction.

There will be a substantial pool of players released by franchises for the mega auction, as well as a number of players with prior captaincy experience who will be available to teams in the auction.

Here are five players who have the potential to succeed Virat Kohli as RCB’s captain in IPL 2022:

1. David Warner

Australia’s star opener David Warner will be available for the new teams in the Mega Auctions. After having an underwhelming IPL 2021, subsequently stripped off from captaincy, and playing XI in SRH, David Warner will return to the IPL for a point to prove. In the recently concluded ICC WT20 in the UAE, he was named Player of the Tournament, capping off a successful World Cup campaign for Australia.

Warner’s captaincy style will undoubtedly complement Virat Kohli’s energy. Both are extremely energetic on the field and have an aggressive captaincy style. Warner, in fact, is more tactically sound than Kohli, and RCB will benefit greatly if these two players combine and play together. Warner’s captaincy records are also outstanding.

He led SRH to an IPL victory over RCB in 2016 and has been very successful in assisting them in reaching the playoffs in the subsequent years. Along with his captaincy abilities, the ground at Chinnaswamy Stadium will be ideal for his batting abilities. A left-handed opener who can be aggressive at all stages of the game is a valuable asset.

He has an effective game against spinners and can bash pacers in the power play. Warner has plundered 5449 runs at a strike-rate of 140 in the IPL. His batting style will certainly complement the likes of Kohli and Maxwell, who take their time in the crease.

2. Shreyas Iyer

The ex-captain of Delhi Capitals suffered an injury in the field and unfortunately had to undergo a surgery. This led him to miss the first leg of IPL 2021 and the captaincy duties were handed to Rishabh Pant. Rishabh performed extremely well as a captain and led Delhi to become the table toppers of IPL 2021. Furthermore, after Shreyas returned into the Delhi setup in the 2nd half of IPL 2021, the management decided to stick with Pant as their regular captain.

According to reports, Shreyas Iyer has asked Delhi Capitals to release him so that he could be a captaincy prospect in the mega auctions where as many as 3-4 teams would be looking for a captain. If RCB chooses to purchase Iyer in the auction, he can be a valuable asset as a captain. Shreyas can put forth all of his experience in the RCB setup after having a rich set of experience and captaining under the guidance of Ricky Ponting, who is regarded as one of the best captains in the world.

His captaincy style is more tactical than aggressive, which is the need of the hour for RCB given its dismal run over the years. His records are also impressive after he took over reins of DC from Gautam Gambhir and has led the team to two consecutive playoff appearances in 2019 and 2020. He also helped them reach the finals in 2020, where they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians.

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will suit all types of batters. Shreyas can be RCB’s middle over aggressor alongside Glenn Maxwell, with Kohli acting as the anchor. Iyer’s ability to go down the track and hit the spinners at will has the potential to solve RCB’s perennial issue of middle over aggression. Iyer’s multi-dimensional ability can be put to good use because he is still in the early stages of his career and will most likely become the franchise’s future face.

3. Steve Smith

The 2015 World Cup winner and the former Australia captain, Steve Smith will be back in the Auction tables for the 2022 edition of the IPL. Steve Smith, regarded as an important member of the “Fab-4,” could be an excellent choice for RCB to collaborate with Virat Kohli. He has a fair amount of experience leading the national team in all three formats of the game. After he was embroiled in sandpaper controversy, he was stripped off as the captain for Australia.

He has a wealth of knowledge in his game and can provide the tactical brilliance that RCB will undoubtedly seek in their future captain. Smith, in addition to his national captaincy, he has previously captained IPL franchises. He previously served as captain of the Rajasthan Royals in 2019 and 2020. He played a key role in Rising Pune Supergiant’s successful IPL 2017 season.

RPS advanced to the finals thanks to an outstanding performance by their captain, Steve Smith. He is the type of player who thrives on responsibility and can clearly make sound tactical decisions under extreme stress. Smith can help the Bengaluru-based franchise because he has an uncanny technique that frustrates bowlers.

He can open or bat at 3 and can control the innings throughout the game. He is an excellent timer of the ball, and he can establish a successful combination with Virat Kohli. He has the ability to rotate strike excellently against spin which would take the pressure off the likes of Kohli and Maxwell.

4. Eoin Morgan

Due to the presence of capable overseas performers such as Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, the 2019 World Cup winning captain will most likely be released by the KKR franchise. RCB can capitalize on the opportunity by bidding on him in the Mega Auctions. He is regarded as one of the brilliant captains responsible for English cricket’s meteoric rise in recent years.

His captaincy record is impeccable, and he has led England to a World Cup victory. He was also responsible for England’s outstanding performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Morgan has the ability to provide extreme tactical finesse in the RCB setup. His aggressive moves as a captain have gotten a lot of attention.

He was regarded as the primary reason for KKR’s turnaround in the second half of the IPL 2021. With his tactical acumen, he successfully carried the KKR team to the finals. Depending on the matchups, he makes brilliant bowling changes and sets up a really tight field. In terms of captaincy skillset, he can be the necessary change for the RCB franchise.

Morgan also offers a brilliant batting value for the Bengaluru based franchise. He is the kind of batter who can fill the shoes of AB de Villiers in the future. He can bat after Maxwell in the line-up and can provide the necessary impetus at the death. RCB needs a very aggressive middle order batsman to provide the cushion for Maxwell to fire and Morgan can be easily considered a potential option for the finisher role.

5. Manish Pandey

The flamboyant batter from Karnataka, was purchased by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the year 2018 for a whopping 11 crores. Since then, he has been the cornerstone in SRH’s batting line-up. Unfortunately, he endured a disastrous IPL 2021 and was eventually dropped from the playing XI. He is unlikely to be retained by the Hyderabad franchise and will be back to the auction tables this year.

Manish Pandey has extensive experience as a captain in domestic cricket. He has captained Karnataka’s domestic team in recent years and has been quite successful. In SMAT 2021, he led Karnataka to the finals despite the absence of key players such as Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal. He is regarded as an astute captain and a brilliant man manager.

With a number of superstars already present in the RCB setup in Kohli and Maxwell, he is the type of guy who can take the franchise forward and help them play as a team. Furthermore, he is a local lad who has the potential to become the franchise’s face in the future by instilling some local fervour. Manish Pandey will also cherish the opportunity to bat at his home ground at the Chinnaswamy. He is the type of batter who can command innings in all phases of the game.

He can demolish any bowling attack when paired with Kohli or Maxwell. He also performs well under pressure, as evidenced by his match-winning innings for KKR in the IPL 2014 final. In addition to his batting ability, he is an exceptional fielder who is capable of taking some stunners and changing the course of a game. Overall, he has the potential to be the matchwinner that RCB seeks.
