Rahul Chahar could be a better wicket-taking option than Varun Chakaravarthy: Danish Kaneria

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria feels India should pick leg-spinner Rahul Chahar in their playing XI ahead of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Team India has benched Chahar in all four matches so far and preferred Chakaravarthy in three outings who has gone wicketless so far. Even against Scotland who were bundled out for just 85 runs, the mystery of Varun didn’t work.

Kaneria reckons having a leg-spinner in the side will give more variety to India’s bowling attack and a bowler like Rahul Chahar can turn out be a wicket-taking option for the team. But the former leg-spinner also cautioned that the youngster’s confidence could’ve taken a massive hit having not played in any of the World Cup matches so far.

Rather Rahul last played a game on September 28, 2021 during the second leg of the IPL and poor returns led to even Mumbai Indians dropping him from playing XI. However, he bowled in the two warm-up games against England and Australia returning with the figures of 1/43 and 1/17.

“Rahul Chahar is a better choice than Varun Chakravarthy. He is a right arm leg-spinner and has a lot of variety. Varun, on the other hand, lacks variety. Rahul could be a wicket-taking option. However, Rahul’s confidence might have shattered now,” Kaneria said while speaking on his Youtube channel.

India eagerly wait for the NZ vs AFG game

Meanwhile, India have solved their NRR issue with massive wins over Afghanistan and Scotland and now eagerly wait for the game between New Zealand and Afghanistan. They need Mohammad Nabi’s men to trump the Kiwis in order to have any chance of making it to the knockouts of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Earlier, there was an issue over Afghanistan’s winning margin as well but that has been sorted now.

New Zealand will face the spirited Afghanistan side on November 7 in Abu Dhabi. India have the advantage of playing the last game of the Super 12 stage and will know the exact equation against Namibia. The clash is set to be played on November 8 in Dubai.
