IPL 2022 Points Table Rules

All the eight participating teams aim to end up in the top-four slot, which is a necessary condition to proceed for the Playoffs. There is an added incentive for the teams finishing in the top-two slot as they get two chances to make their place into the final.

The standings of each participant of the tournament are decided based on a points system, and on an occasion of a tie, the Net Run Rate is used as a tie-breaker. The Net Run Rate is calculated as ‘the number of runs scored by the team to the number of overs faced’ to ‘the number of runs conceded by the team to the number of overs bowled in the same tournament.

A team is awarded 2 points for a win and 0 for a loss, whereas the points are shared equally in the cases where the game is either abandoned or ends in no result.

IPL Standing Trivia

  • The only team to have qualified for the Playoffs in every season (except the two years they were banned) is Chennai Super Kings.
  • Only Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Deccan Chargers (now defunct) have finished an IPL season with two wins (4 points) in a season, the lowest for any team.
  • These two teams also hold the distinction of being the teams that have never finished at the top spot in the Indian Premier League Points table but have gone onto win at least one title.
  • The lowest points with which a team has ever progressed to the Playoffs in the IPL history is 12.
