The ongoing three-match ODI series between England and India is all square at 1-1 after England thrashed India by 100 runs in the second match at Lord’s on July 14, Thursday. The decider will be played on Sunday in Old Trafford, Manchester.

England put up a strong bowling display at Lord’s, defending a total of 247. Tall left-arm pacer Reece Topley dismantled the Indian batting lineup and finished with figures of six wickets for 24 runs in 9.5 overs. Unsurprisingly, he was awarded the Man of the Match.

In the first ODI at The Oval, it was the Indian bowling lineup, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, that ripped through the English batters. India bowled the hosts out for 110, courtesy of Bumrah, who picked up six wickets for 19 runs in 7.2 overs. India chased the target down in 18.4 overs and ten wickets in hand. With two strong performances from two different teams in the two games, the decider promises a thrilling contest.

Here are three tactical changes India should make for the third ODI:

1.Shardul Thakur in place of Prasidh Krishna

Pacer Prasidh Krishna was given the nod for the first two ODIs over Shardul Thakur and Arshdeep Singh, as the third seamer after Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. He picked up one wicket each in both the games but has been a touch expensive.

Krishna conceded 26 runs in five overs at The Oval and 53 runs in eight overs at Lord’s. With Shardul waiting in the ranks, he might be given the thumbs up to start on Sunday over Krishna.

Shardul has fairly more experience on the international circuit, bowling in English conditions, and he also offers depth in the batting lineup. It was exposed in the second match that India were missing a proper number eight and lacked someone who was capable of contributing with the bat down the order.

2. Hardik Pandya as the third seamer

In the first two matches, Hardik Pandya was more of a fourth seamer in a pack that already had three seamers and two spinners. Given that he has been bowling fairly well on the tour, picking up some crucial wickets with decent economy rates, he must bowl more in the upcoming game.

In the two matches, he has bowled a total of only ten overs, bagging two wickets for 50 runs. He scalped key wickets of Jason Roy and Liam Livingstone in the second ODI.

Hardik’s control with swing has been impressive over the tour. He has added an effective and sharp bouncer into his arsenal, making him a very effective pacer in this condition. Skipper Rohit Sharma must consider handing more overs to the Indian all-rounder in Manchester.

3. Change in Suryakumar Yadav’s batting position

Suryakumar Yadav has been in a good form across both limited-overs formats, and it is a must for India to utilise that by giving the batter more time in the middle. He batted at number five in the second ODI, behind Rishabh Pant, who came in at number four.

The number four position seems ideal, at the moment, for Yadav, so that he can come earlier and stop a potential collapse after losing two wickets. Pant, on the other hand, has batted at number five in the past and can be given the license to play his natural attacking game in that position.

In the second game, Pant failed to register a run and eventually got out of a full toss in his fifth ball, facing Brydon Carse. Yadav, with a hundred and a score of 27 in his last two innings on the tour, looks to be in good touch, and his contribution up front could be crucial for the Men in Blue in the decider.
