Mumbai Indians had a dismal campaign in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. They failed to stitch consecutive wins under their belt and finished the league stage at the bottom-most position. Following a horrid season, MI let go of 13 players, while veteran Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from the league.

The Mumbai franchise will enter the IPL 2023 auction with a purse of INR 20.55 crore. Rohit Sharma & co. would try to rope in top-quality players at the marquee event in a bid to vindicate themselves for the next season. One could witness Mumbai going after players who are part of their SA20-owned franchise, MI Cape Town at the forthcoming auction.

Here are three Players from MI Cape Town Mumbai Indians might target at the IPL 2023 auction:

3. Odean Smith

Odean Smith has been a proven performer in the T20 circuit. He has troubled batters with his skiddy pace and made shot-making difficult. Also, the 26-year-old is a ferocious striker of the cricket ball and has played some blistering knocks for his side. He has bagged 70 wickets in 66 T20 matches and scored 485 runs at a strike rate of 138.96.

Atn the international arena too, he has featured in 24 T20Is and bagged as many wickets at an economy of 9.84. On the batting front, Smith has scored 162 runs at a strike rate of 139.65. The Jamaica-born brings balance to the side due to his all-round might and many franchises would be eager to pick him at the IPL 2023 auction.

Mumbai Indians lack all-rounders in their squad, having released the likes of Daniel Sams and Fabian Allen. Thus, MI are likely to go shopping for some multi-faceted cricketers and the team management could to look have someone like Smith in the mix.

2. Rassie van der Dussen

Rassie van der Dussen has been a run-bank for South Africa in the white-ball circuit. The 33-year-old has featured in 38 ODIs and scored 1525 runs at an average of 69.31. In the T20Is, he has scored 1044 runs in 41 matches at a strike rate of 128.72.

Rassie has shepherded the innings beautifully and allowed other stroke makers to play with freedom. He has shown the ability to swiftly switch gears and put bowling attacks under the pump. The Proteas batter will go under the hammer at the upcoming auction and Mumbai Indians could be interested in signing him.

The five-time IPL champions possess the likes of Tim David, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis in their batting arsenal. David is an established performer at the big stage but the South African duo lacks the experience of playing in crunch situations. vab der Dussen’s inclusion shall provide stability to the batting line-up and thus, MI could add the Pretoria-born to their arsenal.

1. Sam Curran

Sam Curran has been a match-winner with both bat and ball and has proven his mettle in the T20 competitions around the world. The 24-year-old has featured in 145 games in the shortest format and bagged 149 wickets at an economy of 8.43. On the batting front, he has smashed 1731 runs at a strike rate of 135.65.

Curran’s bowling stocks have grown leaps and bounds of late and his stunning performances at the T20 World Cup 2022 were a prime example of the same. The left-arm pacer was Jos Buttler’s go-to man for the death overs and delivered the goods on most occasions. He took 13 wickets in six games in the T20 carnival that too at a stellar economy of 6.52 and was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his breathtaking bowling displays.

Given Curran’s meteoric rise, he could be on the wishlist of Mumbai Indians. The England all-rounder has shown his ability to bowl at any phase of the game and play handy knocks with the bat. Moreover, he has been expectational in the IPL arena too, bagging 32 wickets in as many games and hammering 337 runs at a strike rate of 149.78. Therefore, the Mumbai franchise could go all guns blazing to sign the Northampton-born at the forthcoming auction.
